Hiring a Mechanic

Hiring a Mechanic to Inspect the Bus:

Hiring a mechanic to inspect the bus is the most important step in buying a bus. Even if you are a mechanic, we recommend seeking another opinion.

Here are four reasons why you should hire a mechanic to inspect the bus:

  1. They know what to look for. While we suggest (and highly encourage!) that you perform your own inspection, their job is to assess the state of vehicles and look for anything that may cause issues down the line.
  2. They are not emotionally invested in the state of your bus. Sometimes it can be easy to overlook or dismiss flaws when we are overly invested in something, so you want to hire someone that will be transparent about any and all issues.
  3. While they may not find anything currently wrong with the bus, they may find potential failure points. Hiring a mechanic will give you a "hit list" of items that you can fix immediately or later on down the road.
  4. They'll be able to provide you with clarity on how bad an issue is (or isn't) as well as the cost of fixing that issue. Something that you might think is a big deal may not actually be and vice versa.

What to look for when hiring a mechanic:

  • Try to find a mechanic that is located near the bus.
  • Pay attention to reviews! It's better to work with a mechanic that has 400 reviews and a rating of 4 stars over a mechanic that has 5 stars and 3 reviews.
  • Make sure that if your bus runs on diesel that you find a diesel mechanic.
  • A general inspection should not cost more than a couple hundred dollars.

PRO TIP: Like when making a major medical decision, it's important to get the opinion of more than just one mechanic, especially if you are extremely interested in purchasing the bus. We recommend a minimum of three.
